The sun actually came out today. Being so close to the coast, we have had long lingering June Gloom. This causes all kinds of issues for us. Unripe tomatoes. Powdery mildew on the cucurbits. It causes a slowing down, right when people are hungry and ready to speed it up.
We’ve harvested a few eggplants this week. The plants are erect and strong and covered with flowers. A few of those flowers have buds. Pulling those first eggplants off, and a (hopefully) warm weekend should push that right into production.
We’ve also got a chance of melons for the boxes all week next week. While doing our farm report yesterday, we noticed that some of the musk melons were slipping off the vine. Full slip means the melon is READY RIGHT NOW. Tuesday and Wednesdays boxes should have juicy musk melons. Based on customer feedback from last year, we went with a smaller melon. Personal size, if you please. The powdery mildew really kills the plant right down. It is pretty thick on squash, cukes, and melons. Most melons only produce two or three fruit per vine, so we are in a race. The plant has to grow enough to let the fruit mature, and the fruit has to mature to sweetness. But the powdery mildew is strangling it. Beat the powdery mildew! We could spray sulfur on the plants to control the powdery mildew. We could. We won’t. We aren’t that desperate yet!
The okra is also coming along. Somebody was eating the plants all through May, so they’ve struggled to grow. Lots of the leaves are chewed on and deformed. The plants remain short - less than knee-high - and are just starting to flower. I ate a small 1 inch okra two weeks ago and it was wonderful. Robin pulled a 6-incher off the plant yesterday. Too big and mucousy. Perfect for pickling!
