Frequently Asked Questions
Are your vegetables certified organic?
Yes, we are certified organic by OneCert.
How much does it cost?
One box of delicious, locally harvested organic produce is $25. You can get a box every week or every other week.
What's in a box?
It depends what's growing in the garden. Right now we are aiming for between 8-15 products. This includes fresh herbs, edible flowers, and sprouts, in addition to the vegetables and fruits normally found in CSA boxes.
Check out this list of sample boxes. You can also sneak a peak at our harvest schedule.
Will I get fruit?
Yes, you will. In the summer of 2009 we had Moon and Stars, and Desert King Watermelons. The spring of 2010 produced so many strawberries. Members were getting three pints a week. More fruit is coming, but we are committed to growing it all on our farm. Read more about the fruit we have coming.
Where do I pick up my produce?
We have 15 locations and will add more as necessary. View our pick-up locations and times to find the one most convenient for you. You will specify your location during the sign-up process.
Most pick-up locations are private residences that do not have refrigerated storage. Although your box will be delivered in a refrigerated truck, once it is delivered it is likely to be waiting for you on someone's front porch. To maintain the integrity and freshness of your produce, it is imperative that you come during the scheduled pick-up hours.
Please bring your own bags or box to pick up your produce. To minimize waste and cost, we re-use our boxes. Remember to break down your boxes after transferring the contents.
Remember that most of our host sites are private residences. These hosts are doing all of us a favor by allowing us to use their home to transact our business. Please be respectful. Adhere to the pick-up hours, leave your folded up boxes in the place the host has designated, and have a back up plan if you cannot pick up your box.
What if I can't pick up my box? If I go on vacation? If I forget to pick up?
If you are going to be away or cannot pick up your box, please make arrangements with a neighbor or friend to pick up and/or use your box.
If this is not possible, we offer 2 re-scheules. We need at least 5 days notice if you are unable to pick up your box. So if you normally pick up on Tuesday, you would need to notify us by th previous Friday. If you forget to pick-up your box, we cannot replace it. Forgotten boxes are left to the host's discretion.
What if I don't like radishes? (Or tomatillos? Or spinach? Or lettuce?) I don't want to waste/spend money on food that I'm not going to eat. Can I customize my box?
We understand that not everyone is going to like every single item every week. Some people may not even recognize some of the things in their box! But I'm sure you can understand the logistics of preparing individual boxes for over 300 shareholders! And then how could the host, who is a volunteer, possibly keep track of individual shareholders boxes and insure that they each get their custom made box?
That said I understand that you don't want to buy what you are not going to use. But in essence what you are doing is buying a share of the farm. You are participating in something greater than a weekly grocery list. You are bringing sustainable, organic agriculture to your local community and taking part in our unique harvest. Sometimes your box might have things you may not even be able to recognize or maybe the actual contents of the box may differ slightly than the listed contents. That is just how it goes. We try our best to get everything we can in your boxes but sometimes the fields don't necessarily produce all that we plan for.
You are also receiving a greater value than the weekly $25 you are spending. I don't know about you, but when I go to the grocery store I certainly spend more than $25 per week on fruits and veggies! Even though I am selecting items I imagine I will use, I don't always get to everything and I sometimes throw some things away. I'm not condoning this behavior, of course. But it is reality.
That said, perhaps you can buddy up with someone at your host site who adores radishes and tomatillos, but hates your favorites, and trade! Or you can compost them. OR cook something with them to bring to a potluck! The possibilities are endless.
